WebP, AVIF, JPEG or PNG: Which Format Wins?
A practical format decision tree for websites, social posts and archives.
Start with the content
JPEG remains dependable for photographs and broad compatibility. PNG is ideal for lossless graphics, transparency and screenshots with sharp text. WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression and is widely useful for the web.
AVIF can deliver excellent compression, especially for complex photography, but encoding can be slower and some production workflows still require a fallback.
Transparency and animation
When transparency matters, PNG, WebP and AVIF are candidates. WebP also supports animation and often replaces heavier GIF files. Test soft transparent edges because color fringing can appear against different page backgrounds.
For editable archives, keep the layered source and a high-quality master rather than relying on a delivery format as the only copy.
A sensible default
For most sites, use WebP or AVIF for delivery with dimensions tailored to the layout, and retain JPEG or PNG only where compatibility or exact fidelity requires it. The best choice is verified with real images and real browsers, not a format slogan.
